Day Trippin'

The last month or so has been pretty boring to be honest. I wish I had exciting things to write about but it's just not the case. Winter is starting to fade however it rears it's ugly head again at least once or twice a week with some snow and -10 temperatures. I've been told this could go on until May... Very unpredictable weather and you NEVER know what to expect here.

Mostly we have just been working and playing it low key. D and I have been on a few small drives recently to try and fill in our days off. We are trying to save most of our money for a cruise/tour we have booked up to Alaska with my mum in late May so although we want to explore more money and weather is stopping us for now.

The first drive we took was out to Cochrane & Canmore just west of where we are in Airdrie. Cochrane is a small country town with a heritage style main street definitely a tourist trap but I enjoyed it. Canmore is the town that the film Mystery Alaska was filmed in and borders Banff National Park we walked the main street and stopped in for a beer at the local brewery.

The next drive was North to Rocky Mountain House which is a historic area where people used to trade fur. There are remnants of the old buildings and a nice walk along the river detailing each place and what happened there. We were the only ones out and it was covered in snow. The visitor centre wasn't open but we got chatting to a maintenance man who said Summer is much better for a visit - just like everywhere else.

The day we drove to Drumheller was my favourite - it's known as the Dinosaur capital of the world because of the sheer concentration of bones and fossils in the area. It was the first time we had headed East towards Saskatchewan and instead of seeing mountains ahead all you can see is flat land. Then you start to go down into a valley and that's where the town is situated. Again it was covered in snow but still good for a look around. We drove out to Horse thief Canyon which is a much smaller version of the grand canyon. Then to a Ghost Town called Wayne which was a boom in the gold rush days but now has less than 50 residents. We plan to go back in Summer with my mum to do some of the things we didn't do on this trip.

So for now this is our life. Just working and exploring the local area while there's not much money and too much snow. I am still missing home but I think mostly I am missing the people at home that I wish I could share this with. We are planning to drive down to Montana in the next month or so for D to go on a turkey hunt....
